Toothbrushing/Caring for your Braces

Orthodontic Toothbrush

The orthodontic toothbrush is used the same way as a regular toothbrush. Brush at a 45 ° angle in small circular motions. Brush after meals, snacks, and before bedtime. The orthodontic toothbrush is available at our office.

Interdental Brush

The interdental brush is used to clean under wires and between braces. It is available at our office.

Fluoride Rinse

Flouride rinse is to be used at night after brushing and flossing. Do not eat or drink for ½ after rinsing with fluoride.

Wax

A small piece of wax should be applied to the annoying area, then reapply a new piece after brushing. If something is broken, please call the office.

Disclosing Tablets

Chew one tablet. Wipe teeth with tongue. Rinse mouth. Expectorate (spit out). Old plaque will stain blue. New plaque will stain red. Brush and floss teeth thoroughly to remove all stain.

Floss Threaders

The floss threader is used to guide floss in between your braces and under your wires. It is very important to floss at least once a day. The best time to do this is after brushing your teeth at bedtime. This way you will have plenty of time to floss and can ensure that you have removed all food from your braces.

Mouthguards

If you or your child is going to participate in a sport that requires a mouthguard, you will need to go to a sporting store, and ask for a boilable mouthguard. Put wax over top braces and follow instructions on package. If you have any questions please call.

Broken Wires

The first wires placed on a patient are light and flexible. Some of our younger patients still have baby teeth and or new teeth erupting. More care is needed to avoid dislodging these wires. If a wire should break or is dislodged, please call the office to have it replaced.

Regular Visits

Prior to coming to the office for each appointment, please check for any loose or broken braces. If you have a loose or broken brace, please let one of our receptionists know prior to your appointment or when you arrive. Please brush your teeth immediately prior to each appointment or once you have checked in for your appointment. Disposable pre-pasted brushes are available at the tooth brushing area.
