Retainers

Drs. Kristal and Forche customize a retention protocol specifically for each patient. The care for our patients does not end when the braces are removed. Once teeth are in their perfect position, they need to be held for a period of time to prevent relapse. This is called the retention phase of orthodontic treatment. Retainers may either be removable or permanent, and it is extremely important that they be cared for and worn according to the specific instructions given by Drs. Kristal and Forche.

Guidelines for wear and care of removable retainers
- Retainers are to be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless Drs. Kristal and Forche instruct otherwise.
- Retainers are to be taken out of your mouth for eating, brushing teeth, and certain sports.
- When the retainers are not in your mouth make sure they are in their case.
- DO NOT wrap your retainers in paper towels, napkins, or tissues. You will lose or break them.
- Brush your retainers with your toothbrush in cool (never hot) water to clean them. If you notice an unusual amount of build-up on your retainers, please bring them into our office and we will be more than happy to professionally clean them for you!
- Always keep your retainers away from your pets. Pets, especially dogs, have a tendency to eat them!
